President's Message

Fellow Rotarians,

It was great to be back after being in Perth and Brisbane over the past two weeks.

On Saturday Lynne and I, as well as others from our club, attended the District 9685 Conference held at Penrith Panthers Club. This was an experimental one-day conference which is a less expensive option than the more elaborate weekend events. Next year the conference will revert to a weekend format, Saturday/Sunday, and will be held at the Fairmont Resort, Leura, on 10th and 11th March 2018, with incoming DG Peter Ward.

One of the highlights of each conference is the presentation of Vocational Excellence Awards. Awardees this year were:

Associate Professor Sheryl van Nunen for her work on tick bite allergy

John Bell, founder of Bell Shakespeare Theatre Company

Justice Elizabeth Olsson of the District Court

The afternoon breakout sessions for Community, Youth, Vocational and International were of mixed quality. One of the best was Vocational – TAFE advocate Brian Wexham gave an interesting address, followed by a demonstration of the Four Way Test Debate between students from Abbotsleigh and Turramurra High Schools.

On Monday 27th March, coin committee chairman Stephen Bruce will represent our club at the launch, by the Governor General, of the Rotary/Glycomics Malaria Vaccine Project at Griffith University on the Gold Coast. Rotary District 9640 and the Institute for Glycomics, Griffith University, are sponsors of the project, and we have so far donated $10,000 from our foreign coin programme towards this ground-breaking research initiative.

Welcome back to Ralf after his recent time in hospital, and to Sadia, who is now back on her feet and should be with us in the next few weeks.
Please consider attending and bringing friends to the Hawkesbury River cruise on Sunday 9th April – numbers are down and we need another 20 to make it more viable.

 Yours in Rotary

Geoff

"Service Anniversaries this month" is being updated.

The 4-Way Test
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

The Object Of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Attendee’s Reminder

Please let us know if you are not going to attend or attending but not eating.
Fellows, remember that you may invite wives, partners, children, family, friends and other Rotarians to all our meetings - just remember to let us know.  Apologies and advice of guests can be submitted online at www.hornsbydistrictrotary.org
