President's Message

Last night’s topic was the Coin Programme.

We had two visiting guests from the Rotary Club of Brimbank Central in Melbourne, Barbara and John Rafter. They collect the coins for us in Victoria. They do a run through Victoria of over 200 km in a day, starting at 7am and finishing at 3pm. Last night they gave us 43 kg of coins from their recent collections. What wonderful service they are giving to Rotary.

The Coin Programme was started by a previous Rotary club member, Adrian Garton, who moved to the Hunter Valley and now lives in Orange.

The programme has been running for about 20 years. Around Australia we have approx 250 collection boxes in sites such as Bendigo Banks, Westpac, Commonwealth Bank, Harvey World Travel etc. Funds raised have been over $400,000 since it started and we have 160 different currencies sorted. In the past financial year we have collected 682kg of foreign coins.

Each collection box is tracked with a unique number and a new system of record-keeping, developed by Craig Fretwell, is making the scheme a lot easier to manage.

Rotarians and friends collect the boxes and the coins and notes are sorted. Rotarians and others who are going overseas help to repatriate the currency, and some also goes to Global Money Exchange in Queensland. Once repatriated, the funds go from the Rotary account straight to programmes for prevention of malaria and other international projects.

Multicultural Day

Once again the Multicultural Day at Hornsby Girls’ High was a great success and a marvellous community service project. With the sale of books from both our own collection and that of Lifeline, we raised just under $1000 ($954.05) which we will present to Lifeline in the near future.

My thanks go to Robert Caldwell, in particular, for his leadership in organising the day, and to Sarah and Catherine Fretwell, our exchange student Jonas, Sardia, the Lifeline gang and my fellow Rotarians.

Friday 26th August was Daffodil Day for the Cancer Council and we will be selling merchandise at Hornsby station. Robert Caldwell  organised the roster of helpers, and thanks everyolne who found it possible to give some time to this important project. Unfortunately I was not there as I was travelling to Melbourne on Friday morning for a business meeting and then to visit our new granddaughter who was born on August 12th.

Youth Service

Nothing really exciting In Youth this week, our inbound student, Chloe, continues to get the most out of her exchange and the way she approaches the exchange experience really impresses me.

We are currently trying to engage a RYLA candidate. RYLA being one of the ‘Gold Class’ Rotary Youth Programs.

A reminder, to help us raise funds for Youth and other community projects I am running an online Car Boot Sale. Any household goods you no longer need consider donating to the club so we can sell them online. We have had good success so far, although only with small amount of goods. So dig out all those unwanted Christmas and Wedding gifts hiding in the cupboard and contact me.

The 4-Way Test
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

The Object Of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
